Two different image gallery techniques caught my eye while searching for ways to present a gallery without the use of flash.
Slideshow 2 is a javascript class for Mootools 1.2. Check out the demos and options (my fav is the Ken Burns show)… very snazzy!
Fancybox was built using the jQuery library . Displays content in a Mac style “lightbox” that floats over the web page.
Both discribe themselves to be lightweight and easily customizable.
Good article on page folds with user testing evidence that shows not everything needs to be crammed into the top 450 or so pixels.
I had a friend recently ask me what he would need to do to get an image gallery up and running rather quickly (and cheaply). After doing a bit of searching, I came across these two goodies. Both are flash based galleries (but don’t require you to even own/open flash), customized via XML - and both are free.
SimpleViewer
SimpleViewer.net is home to a collection of excellent image viewers. They are free to download and use on both personal and/or commercial projects. They subscribe to the ‘Don’t make me think’ philosophy, so the galleries are relatively simple to edit. Upgrade to the Pro version ($45) for even more customization.
Warm Forest - Sycamore theme
The Sycamore Free Version is a one page flash site that works well if you want to show several images in a project grouping - great for design portfolios. Very easy to edit/customize through XML. The free version is limited to 12 projects, and has a link back to Warm Forest. The full version ($49) contains no Warm Forest branding and allows unlimited portfolio projects. All source files are included in the full version as well – including all FLA’s and ActionScript classes.
